Born on paper with a floor-length vest and a metallic shirt; it ended as a short vest over white poplin. The name kept the dream — the grid kept the idea.
In the sketch, the vest ran down to the floor and the shirt was metallic. On the table, both changed their minds: the vest shrank to the waist, the shirt ended up white, in poplin. It’s called metallic because it was born metallic — the name kept the dream. What survived intact was the grid: the cut diamonds hide nothing, they cut the light, and the drawing happens between fabric and shadow.
The deviation belongs to the piece, not the construction: a collar mounted without excuses, shoulders in place, the vest resting without pulling at the shirt. Cutting a grid that doesn’t collapse is sewn geometry — every diamond removes fabric, and the structure has to remain. The grid rehearsed first in shock yellow, pinned over raw calico, before it wore black. The machine did the maths on the voids; I decided where the light was allowed in.
